KITCHEN SANCTUM

A sanctum is a sacred place in a structure. The kitchen serves as a refuge as the heart of the home and central in the engagement of sustenance, creativity, restoration, empowerment, self-care, magic, and celebration. Enter the kitchen sanctum where we will cook, share recipes, remedies, potions, stories, and strategies to liberate and revolutionize our connection to food, our bodies, and each other. We will affirm ourselves through rituals and ways that challenge assumptions about our health, honor culturally relevant food, heritage and relish the satisfaction adventures in culinary artistry and fellowship in the kitchen can provide for retreat, security, and a haven for wellbeing as a place customarily ruled by women. Thus the kitchen sanctum seeks to empower all that enter and especially women as a healing space for them to occupy and be nourishingly engaged.

The book Our Bodies Ourselves emphasized the importance of self-education, preventive health care, and reform of the American healthcare system to provide better service to women. Kitchen Sanctum serves to celebrate and compliment the sentiments to bring the book alive and create relevancy for a new era.

Along with cooking and self-care activities in the kitchen, the kitchen is a vehicle and catalyst to also talk about a wide array of topics, from body image, sexuality, and birth control to menopause and the aging process. We want a wide variety of ages, genders, and the population that reflects New Haven and beyond to partake and create to be inspired.
